Camera Sensor Dust Spots, Shutter Curtain Failure, and Aperture Solenoid Diagnostics

Understanding how to diagnose image artifacts and shutter mechanisms ensures you never ruin an irreplaceable photoshoot.

Diagnosing Image Artifacts: The f/22 Test

Before assuming your digital sensor is damaged, perform this standardized optical diagnosis:

  1. Set your camera to Aperture Priority (A/Av) and stop down the lens to its smallest aperture (f/22 or f/32).
  2. Set ISO to 100 and focus to manual infinity.
  3. Point the lens at an evenly lit white wall or clear blue sky, then move the camera slightly during a 1-to-2 second exposure.

Because the camera moved, any environmental details will blur, but particles sitting directly on the sensor's optical low-pass filter (OLPF) or IR-cut glass will appear as razor-sharp, circular dark dots. If you zoom in and the spots change position when swapping lenses, the dust is on the rear lens element; if the spots remain in identical coordinates across multiple lenses, the sensor surface requires cleaning.

Wet Sensor Swabbing vs. Dry Blower Safety

Never use canned compressed air: Compressed gas cans contain liquid fluorocarbon propellants that spray cold chemical residue onto the optical glass, creating stubborn oily streaks that can degrade optical coatings.

The Safe Wet Swab Technique: In an environment free of circulating drafts, use a lint-free non-conductive sensor swab matching your sensor format (APS-C or Full Frame). Apply two drops of high-purity, fast-evaporating optical cleaning solvent (such as Eclipse fluid). Draw the swab smoothly across the sensor in one continuous stroke with light pressure, flip the swab to the reverse edge, and sweep back once. Always discard the swab after a single use.

Recognizing Mechanical Shutter Failure

Mechanical focal plane shutters consist of microscopic carbon-fiber or titanium blades traveling across the focal plane in fractions of a millisecond. Standard shutters are rated for 150,000 to 400,000 actuations.

  • Horizontal Black Banding: If images show a dark black gradient across the top or bottom of the frame at high shutter speeds (above 1/1000s), the second shutter curtain is lagging behind the first due to spring fatigue or broken blade linkages.
  • Error 20 / Error 99 (DSLRs): Camera locks up on shutter release with an audible mechanical grind, indicating shutter drive motor gearbox binding or blown aperture control solenoids.
