OLED televisions deliver stunning infinite contrast and perfect black levels because each individual sub-pixel produces its own light. However, because organic light-emitting diodes utilize organic carbon compounds, they degrade chemically with cumulative light emission. Understanding how to differentiate temporary image retention from permanent burn-in is critical for proper diagnosis and maintenance.

Image Retention vs. Permanent Burn-In

Temporary Image Retention: After displaying a bright static high-contrast image (like a paused video or game interface) for an extended period, a faint ghost image remains visible on darker screens. This is caused by residual electrical charge stored across the Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) backplane and naturally fades as normal varying content is viewed or a quick pixel-refresh cycle runs.

Permanent Burn-In: Occurs when specific sub-pixels (particularly red and blue organic emitters) have been operated at maximum luminance for hundreds of cumulative hours—such as static news tickers, TV channel watermarks, or static gaming health bars. The organic compounds in those specific sub-pixels have lost maximum light output capacity, resulting in permanent uneven patches across solid color fields.
